Getting Ready for the Professionals

It can be hard not to try and remedy the situation yourself. That said, we recommend leaving the job up to the professionals. However, there are some measures you can take before the Paul Davis crew arrives. To salvage everything in your home from water damage, it's essential to act quickly. First, make sure your property is safe to enter. Unplug all electronics and breakers around your property to avoid electrocution. It may sound overly careful, but dampened appliances can be harmful when exposed to water.

First Things First

Water is a persistent liquid that can dampen every nook and cranny in your home. Remove all your smaller possessions to avoid increased water damage. Use a dry, stable surface to lay books, magazines and other paper items. Books and any inked items should be go on a stable, dry surface. Don't forget lamps and other tabletop items either. You can begin cleaning once you've relocated paper material, small items and other dampened materials. To start the drying process, use air movers and your home's AC throughout your property to circulate air throughout the area. Leave the big messes for the pros, however, you can wipe and mop surface spots. Though you may want to try, don't use a normal home vacuum to remove water. This can damage the vacuum and hurt you if incorrectly handled. When you're ready to move furniture, prop up furniture such as sofas and heavy chairs onto wooden and cement blocks to elevate them off the wet areas. Fabrics and carpet take on weight when exposed to water. All that additional weight makes leather goods, fur and rugs difficult to lift. If you must remove a rug, proceed with caution. Hang clothing, draperies and other fabrics away from the wet area to dry correctly. Depending on the severity of water damage in your home, you may not be able to keep every item of fabric you own. Your property's foundation and floors aren't immune to water weight either. Because of this, stay away from sagging ceilings or bent floors. These areas have likely taken on the most water and could collapse under weight.
